His music is social commentary and opinion with a human face. It's sharp enough to make you think and warm enough to make you feel understood, drawing on a life spent observing the world closely and refusing to look away from what he finds. From the band rooms of his youth to hundreds of gigs as lead singer and guitarist across a variety of bands, and more than a decade of solo performances alongside, he has always used song as the natural home for what he wants to say. At the heart of it is language. Massie is a wordsmith as much as a musician: someone who reaches for poetry and lyrics the way other people reach for a notepad. He adapts thoughts, opinions and observations into words first, then sets them to music—a process that gives his songs a literary quality that sits alongside, and enriches, the sound. Raised on guitar music of all kinds and reinvigorated in the 1990s by sounds from both sides of the Atlantic, Massie remains a restless listener. He searches for great music the way some people search for rare records—relentlessly, and with genuine excitement when something extraordinary turns up. His children's own deep immersion in music has been an inspiration of its own. Many songs have been recorded across many years. They have all led, in their own way, to this... The Great Recycle is the solo project of Jerry Evans—a man with music running through every decade of his life. The name reflects Jerry's lifelong passion for the environment and renewable energy runs alongside his music. The Great Recycle The Great Recycle is the solo project of Jerry Evans—musician, songwriter, co-founder of Skruffy Records, and a man with music running through every decade of his life. The name reflects something real: Jerry's lifelong passion for the environment and renewable energy runs alongside his music, and the two things aren't as separate as they might seem. Recycling, reimagining, finding something new in what already exists—it's a philosophy as much as a name. Jerry's musical journey stretches back to 1977, when he formed his first band, Bad Habits, with fellow Skruffy Records co-founder Colin Massie. By 1978 he was singing and playing guitar in a punk band called The DS, gigging extensively around Devon and Cornwall and supporting touring acts including The Clash and the UK Subs. In 1980 he arrived in London, reinvented as a keyboard player, gigging with a string of bands before teaming up around 1984 with Mick Rossi and his band of the time, The Duellists. Rossi and Evans went on to work together as a production team until Mick moved to Los Angeles in the late 1980s. The 1990s and 2000s were largely given over to running music-related businesses—Jerry's company Tickle worked with Blur, Simply Red and Queen, among others. Music took a back seat, though he did find time to play in the gloriously informal Lend Us a Quid, a band loosely held together by John Oz Osmond and notable for the roster of musicians who passed through it over the years,... Formed in 2023, Ides of Sedition brings together Chris Bashford—an original member of seminal British punk band Chelsea, one of the key acts of the 1977 punk explosion—and Caralinda Booth, a keyboardist and arranger whose credits include Shakespears Sister, Thompson Twins and Deborah Harry. Ides of Sedition Some musical partnerships feel inevitable in hindsight. Ides of Sedition is one of them. Between them, they carry decades of hard-won experience across punk, post-punk and new wave, and they've channelled all of it into something that feels fresh, considered and completely their own. Perfection Is Overrated The band's debut album is Perfection Is Overrated. The title is something of a statement of intent: this is music made with conviction rather than calculation, with an eye on what feels true rather than what's fashionable. The album draws on the raw energy of Bashford's punk roots and Booth's sophisticated harmonic sensibility, creating a record that rewards repeated listening. Perfection Is Overrated is available now from the Skruffy Records shop in digital and physical formats. The Pedigree Chris Bashford was present at the birth of British punk. As an original member of Chelsea—one of the genre's founding acts, formed in London in the mid-1970s—he helped shape the sound and attitude that went on to influence generations of musicians. His work with Ides of Sedition carries that same uncompromising spirit forward into new territory. Caralinda Booth brings a complementary depth of experience from a different corner of British music. Her keyboard work and arrangements have graced... ## Products The second album, The Clown That Confronts, was produced by Cameron Craig—whose credits run from Adele and Annie Lennox to Joe Strummer and Sia. Jerry plays virtually every instrument on the record himself, with drums provided by Terl Bryant, recorded at his studio in Sussex. Gun Street bandmates Mick Rossi and Howard Bates contribute to Hyperventilating—Rossi's guitar and Bates's bass bringing a distinctive energy to the track. Kelly Stewart's Stewart Academy Choir add a heavenly backing to One Voice, with Kelly and her son Lachlan also contributing to The Long View, The Gig and the title track. The Clown That Confronts will be released on 9 September; but you can pre-order the CD and vinyl TODAY for delivery on release day This 2026 album The Clown That Confronts, has eight original tracks produced by grammy winner Cameron Craig—whose credits run from Adele and Annie Lennox to Joe Strummer and Sia. Drums were provided by Terl Bryant. Gun Street bandmates Mick Rossi and Howard Bates contribute to Hyperventilating—Rossi’s guitar and Bates’s bass bringing a distinctive energy to the track. The Stewart Academy Choir add a heavenly backing to One Voice, Kelly Stewart and her son Lachlan Stewart also contributing backing vocals to The Long View, The Gig and the title track. The remaining original tracks, Diamonds and Better Place were produced by Ed Harcourt with Ed on drums and bass. Jerry has described the album as a significant step up: a record he is genuinely proud of and one that reflects real growth in his songwriting. We can’t wait for you to hear it. He says ‘I am delighted to have collaborated with so many friends, old and new, on this work, I will be forever grateful to them all’. The album starts with Walk This Life, a catchy, light-hearted take on life’s onewayism. Next comes Crash the Moon, a bit of a rant really, is this the best our leaders can do? Really? The Long View with its sumptuous harmonies was inspired by and is an answer to Tom Petty’s Freefalling, we all dream of freedom but it’s strange where we might end up finding it. One Voice is written by Jerry but with choir arrangement by Kelly Stewart. It is... The debut album, Perfection Is Overrated, is now exclusively available from Skruffy Records. Chris Bashford and Caralinda Booth have collaborated to make this intriguing mix of post-punk and alternative rock with a sprinkle of world music sounds, Chris with his powerful drums and memorable guitar riffs blend beautifully with Caralinda’s melodic, subtle but wonderfully interesting keys. All topped off with Chris’s lyrical dexterity. 14 original tracks take you on quite a journey. CD is available now, digital download (CD quality) will also be available soon. All topped off with Chris’s lyrical dexterity. 14 original tracks take you on quite a journey: HATE WAIT LOVE Chris says, “This started off as a simple riff in the style of The Cramps, a bit like Garbageman and I wanted it to be a hypnotic psychobilly type of song. The middle sections is pure psychedelia from the Sid Barret era and the solo is influenced by Robbie Krieger of the Doors. It is all made magical by Caralinda’s keyboard effects and production skills. ” Chris used his Gretch G54222 as the background rhythm to give it a purer sound. MELANCHOLIC GIRL Chris told us that Melancholic Girl was actually written and recorded way back in 1994, possibly intended for the last Chelsea album, CFBL. It was not considered suitable for the band at the time and it was shelved. Chris re-introduced it to Caralinda, “who has a great ear and thought it was a hit single in the making. ” Caralinda completely rearranged the track and wrote and added the brilliant string parts. In the view of the band and Skruffy Records, it is a sleeping beauty and a hit waiting to be... The Great Recycle's self-titled debut album is a mix of songs about love and loss alongside tracks with a strong environmental message, produced by Tom Loffman. It is available now on Skruffy Records on CD and as a digital download (all vinyl formats are now sold out, sorry). The Great Recycle’s 2023 self-titled debut album is a mix of songs about love and loss alongside tracks with a strong environmental message, produced by Tom Loffman. Tom also provides the drums and bass with Jerry Evans on vocals, guitars and keyboards. It is available now on Skruffy Records on CD and as a digital download. Eight original songs, three covers and three minutes of dawn chorus from Devon make up the album. Track three Postage Stamp has a strong following on streaming services to this day. A version of Hurricane Smith’s 1971 hit Don’t Let it Die is just as relevant today as it was at the dawn of environmentalism and is a favourite of Jerry’s. He’s tacked on an original instrumental outro World Chorus and very much hopes Hurricane would have approved. About Skruffy Records Created by Musicians, for Musicians Skruffy Records was born out of frustration and love in equal measure—frustration with an industry that too often treats artists as commodities, and a deep, unshakeable love for music that genuinely means something. We're an independent record label, and proud of it. Independence means we answer to our artists, not to shareholders. It means we make decisions based on what's right for the music, not what's easiest for a spreadsheet. And it means that when we sign an artist, we're making a genuine commitment—not just a commercial bet. The people behind Skruffy Records are musicians themselves. We've been in the rehearsal rooms, on the stages, in the studios. We've dealt with the contracts that weren't what they seemed and the deals that didn't deliver. We also have extensive knowledge of sales and marketing, including a history of building and developing digital technology. That combined experience is exactly why we do things differently. What We Stand For Fair deals. Every artist we sign gets a contract that's transparent, honest and designed to work in their favour as well as ours. We don't hide things in the small print. Creative freedom. We sign artists because we believe in their vision—so we're not going to turn around and tell them how to change it. Our job is to support and amplify what they do, not to homogenise it. Real support. Being signed to Skruffy Records means having a team genuinely invested in your success—from release planning,... So about five years ago I woke up with a tune going around in my head—this is always a good thing as I don’t find inspiration for songs that easily. Disappointingly often that tune turns out to be a song I’ve heard recently or indeed not at all recently and my excitement is dashed. But just sometimes it is original as it was on this occasion. As that day went on, the tune was niggling at me and some rather big ideas formed, I let myself drift off on what was really just a flight of fancy. “Jerry,” I told myself, “this needs a choir and an orchestra and it’s going to sound humongously amazing. ”As the lyrics and arrangement slowly showed themselves over the following days, I dropped the orchestra idea as just silly. However the idea of a big choral piece just wouldn’t leave me. Four years and at least three attempts later, I had manged to put together a half-decent demo, decent enough to keep me excited about the project. Then by a beautiful quirk of fate, my very oldest friend Jim joined a choir and was sending me videos of their performances. With some trepidation, I sent my demo to Kelly Stewart (The Stewart Academy founder) thinking “if you don’t ask you don’t get”. And to my delight she loved the song and agreed to not only have her choir sing,... Choosing a producer is a vital part of recording an album, there are many reasons for finding the right person, especially if you are a solo artist. The importance of choosing the right producer by Jerry Evans aka ‘The Great Recycle’ Cameron Craig producing The Great Recycle album 'The Clown That Confronts' Choosing a producer is a vital part of recording an album, there are many reasons for finding the right person, especially if you are a solo artist. Although I claim to be ‘The Great Recycle’ (a name that came from a song title on my first album) I am in essence a solo performer. And full disclosure, I guess I’m in a unique situation. In a former life I ran a hire company that rented out high-end bits of studio equipment to record companies, studios and producers, so I have to say I am blessed by having had a working relationship with many of the UK’s top producers over the years and I’ve kept in touch with a few. The most important thing in my view, is to find someone you respect and can work closely with, that kind of means they have to respect you too. The recording process gets pretty emotional if it’s any good, just the right amount of encouragement balanced with blunt truthfulness is essential. It’s worth taking time to listen, listen again and listen more, not only to a producer’s back catalogue but to them as a person—meet up, go for a drink, be honest about your ambition, see if you can rub along. Play them your demos and take the time to process any comments. If you aren’t comfortable... Still seeking out live gigs and after finding one and chatting to the band, Jerry (the most entrepreneurial one) says, “we should form a record company! ”This ball was so curved it circled around a few times before landing. Jim and Colin both thought this idea from Jerry must have been months in the planning and deliberately presented at their most vulnerable. Seemingly it was also a surprise to Jerry. It wasn’t just the ale talking, it made sense: Jerry and Colin were both in the throes of recording their own albums and one track featured the choir that Jim sings in. Passionate about music all their lives, one of the key ingredients to their long-standing friendship. Their combined years of performing and music industry knowledge, together with successful careers in business could provide a strong platform for their passion for music and helping fellow artists. In fact, it had unwittingly started decades before with Jerry’s dog, a cheeky and lovable terrier with a punk attitude, known to both Jim and Colin. That dog answered to the name of ‘Skruffy’ and he even appeared on a home recording as Jerry and Colin practiced for a gig with their first band, Bad Habits. And so the record label was born, mirroring Jerry’s childhood dog—breaking loose, breaking boundaries, boundless energy, a cheeky attitude...
