Massie has been writing songs for as long as he can remember—and playing them wherever he can, to whoever will listen.
His music is social commentary and opinion with a human face. It’s sharp enough to make you think and warm enough to make you feel understood, drawing on a life spent observing the world closely and refusing to look away from what he finds. From the band rooms of his youth to hundreds of gigs as lead singer and guitarist across a variety of bands, and more than a decade of solo performances alongside, he has always used song as the natural home for what he wants to say.
At the heart of it is language. Massie is a wordsmith as much as a musician: someone who reaches for poetry and lyrics the way other people reach for a notepad. He adapts thoughts, opinions and observations into words first, then sets them to music—a process that gives his songs a literary quality that sits alongside, and enriches, the sound.
Raised on guitar music of all kinds and reinvigorated in the 1990s by sounds from both sides of the Atlantic, Massie remains a restless listener. He searches for great music the way some people search for rare records—relentlessly, and with genuine excitement when something extraordinary turns up. His children’s own deep immersion in music has been an inspiration of its own.
Many songs have been recorded across many years. They have all led, in their own way, to this moment.
Massie’s debut album is called Wise, and the title is deliberate. The word is defined as ‘having the ability to use knowledge, experience and deep understanding to make sound, insightful judgements and decisions in life.’ These songs are what that looks like in practice: a glimpse of life as it was and as it is today. Reflective, yet fundamentally positive. Honest, though never without warmth. Wise with a capital W and a Skruffy Records attitude.
